CONCORD, N.H. -- Young anglers have a chance to enter a kids fishing photo contest sponsored jointly by Kidz Rule USA (a magazine for children and their families living in New Hampshire) and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. This is the second annual fishing photo contest held by the magazine. The contest is open to all children under age 13. With their parent's permission, children are encouraged to send in their New Hampshire fishing photos with the approximate weight or length of the fish they catch. All entries must be received between May 1 and September 30, 2008.
CONCORD, N.H. -- A search for a missing 58-year-old kayaker from Vermont will continue today on the Connecticut River in Piermont, N.H. On Thursday, May 1, 2008, Robert Swantak of Bradford, Vermont, set out in his kayak on the Waits River in Bradford, Vermont, and then onto the Connecticut River in Piermont, N.H. for an afternoon of fiddlehead picking. Vermont and New Hampshire authorities were notified in the evening of May 1 that Swantak had not returned from his river trip.
CONCORD, N.H. -- State officials responsible for monitoring New Hampshire waterways and protecting public health released updated fish consumption advice that includes several new recommendations: Stocked (hatchery-grown) trout are exempt from the statewide advisory; perch are included with other species that have length restrictions regarding consumption; and four new waterbodies have specific advisories (Dubes Pond, Jackman Reservoir, Mascoma Lake and Tower Hill Pond).

Barry Conservation Camp is located in the White Mountain National Forest at the Berlin Fish Hatchery. Run in cooperation with the N.H. Department of Fish and Game, the camp provides a close-knit community for its 35 campers and eight staff. Nearby York Pond offers swimming and canoeing for the camp. Five cabins house up to seven campers with a counselor in each. Central toilet and shower facilities, as well as a dining hall and kitchen, accommodate the camp.
CONCORD, N.H. -- Fishing in New Hampshire's designated trout ponds and fly-fishing-only ponds opens this year on April 26 (the fourth Saturday in April), offering anglers the chance to experience exciting fishing in some of the Granite State's most scenic surroundings. CONCORD, N.H. -- New Hampshire's white-tailed deer population once again showed no evidence of chronic wasting disease (CWD), based on monitoring data gathered during the 2007 hunting season. New Hampshire Fish and Game Deer Biologist Kent Gustafson recently received results from a federally certified veterinary diagnostic laboratory that indicate that all the deer tissue samples taken during last fall's hunting season tested negative for CWD. A total of 405 tissue samples were tested.
CONCORD, N.H. - Carole Platka, age 18, of Grafton, has taken top honors among young New Hampshire artists in the 2008 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Contest. Platka's colored-pencil drawing of a mallard was chosen from among 159 entries as New Hampshire's State Best of Show in the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest. New Hampshire's portion of the contest was coordinated by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

CONCORD, N.H. - New Hampshire bears are waking up and heading out in search of food to replenish fat reserves depleted during the long winter denning period. Natural foods are somewhat scarce this year, so it's especially important for homeowners to take action now to reduce the chances of a bear visiting their home. Reports are coming in from nearly every county in the state indicating recent bear activity. "The first thing you need to do is take down your bird feeders," says New Hampshire Fish and Game Bear Project Leader Andrew Timmins, explaining that bears are attracted to this nutrient-rich, easily accessible food source.
