COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has confirmed that viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHSv), a virus that causes disease in fish but does not pose any threat to public health, was confirmed present in muskellunge sampled during routine egg collection in Clear Fork Reservoir in late April. The reservoir is located in Richland and Morrow counties.

HORSEPOWER LIMIT RAISED ON PYMATUNING LAKE IN ASHTABULA COUNTY

COLUMBUS, OH - Governor Ted Strickland signed legislation last week that increased the horsepower limit on Pymatuning Lake in Ashtabula County from 9.9 to 20 horsepower. The new rule was part of a comprehensive package of boater safety laws that went into effect on June 13.

YELLOW PERCH BAG LIMIT REDUCED FOR LAKE ERIE'S WESTERN BASIN

COLUMBUS, OH - Lake Erie anglers fishing in Ohio waters west of Huron are reminded that the 30-fish daily bag limit for yellow perch is reduced to 25 fish, effective July 1.

The reduction, approved by the Ohio Wildlife Council in March, is in response to declining yellow perch stocks in western Lake Erie, generally attributed to poor spawning. The daily bag limit will remain at 30 fish per angler from the Huron pier eastward, where perch stocks are more plentiful.

YOUNG OHIO ARCHERS SUCCEED AT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

COLUMBUS, OH - A Meigs County elementary recently became the first Ohio school to place first in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) championship tournament.

Meigs Intermediate School Elementary scored 3,178 points to take the national title in the elementary school division at the 2008 NASP National Championship Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. The team's effort topped the performances of 31 other elementary schools from across the U.S. Maysville Elementary School from Muskingum County finished third in the division.
