South Dakota Submits ‘State-Sponsored’ CRP Proposal to National Office

PIERRE, S.D.—On behalf of more than 50 partners from across the state, the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department presented a Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program proposal to the Governor’s Office last week. With the submission of this proposal on June 3 to the USDA’s Farm Service Agency by Gov. Mike Rounds, there is excitement among many about this program and its expected benefits.

Another Record Deer Harvest in South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota hunters can look back on 2007 as another record-setting year for deer harvest.

According to harvest surveys compiled by the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department, last year saw the all-time highest recorded deer harvest in the state and it was the eighth straight year that deer harvest has increased.

Outdoor Expo a Hit; Second Planned for 2009

PIERRE, S.D.—Successful outdoor excursions usually take planning. The same was true of South Dakota’s first-ever Outdoor Expo. More than two years of planning culminated in a weekend event in May at the State Fairgrounds in Huron that introduced more than 4,000 visitors to the wonders of the outdoors.

Mickelson Trail users to share trail with marathoners this weekend

DEADWOOD, S.D. – Mickelson Trail officials are reminding users that they will be sharing the trail with participants of the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon this Sunday (June 8).

“Non-marathon folks are more than welcome to use the trail during the weekend,” said Park Manager Dana Garry. “We just want to let them know that there will be a large number of other users on that stretch of the trail and ask that they be aware of slower-moving users.”

Oahe Downstream to host activities for National Get Outdoors Day

FORT PIERRE, S.D. – Spend the day outside during the National Get Outdoors Day event on June 14 at Oahe Downstream Recreation Area near Pierre/Ft. Pierre.

A wide variety of family activities will take place throughout the day, including fish-golfing, geocaching, Dutch oven cooking, a snorkeling demonstration, a nature hike and various other outdoor activities. Kids will also get a chance to practice boating safety with U.S. Army Corps of Engineer mini-boats they can operate on the water.

Changes Proposed for Mountain Lion Hunting Season

Open House Scheduled at Blue Dog State Fish Hatchery

WAUBAY, S.D.--The S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department announces the near completion of a $3 million renovation project at Blue Dog State Fish Hatchery located near Waubay.

On May 10, from 10 a.m. until noon, the public is invited to attend an open house at Blue Dog Hatchery located one-half mile west and one mile north of Waubay. Since its inception in 1982, Blue Dog Hatchery has raised 13 different fish species that have been stocked into South Dakota lakes for sport-fishing opportunities.

New Law Relies on Parents to Decide if Children Can Hunt

PIERRE, S.D.—South Dakota’s hunting heritage has traditionally been passed from one generation to the next. Recognizing that linage, and wanting to help it along, the S.D. Legislature approved a bill this year that allows children as young as 10 years of age to take part in mentored hunting opportunities.

Trout Will be Stocked Near Pierre

PIERRE, S.D. – Rainbow trout will be stocked in two areas near Pierre throughout April.

Game, Fish and Parks Fisheries Biologist Robert Hanten of Fort Pierre said the department will stock catchable-sized rainbow trout in the Oahe Marina and in Downs Marina just downstream of the LaFramboise causeway.

New State Park Walking Maps

PIERRE, S.D.--Walking in the South Dakota state parks is an excellent way to explore the outdoors while getting exercise. To help walkers know how far they are walking on the park roads, the Division of Parks and Recreation has added a new feature to their web site. Walkers can now go online and find the distances for their favorite road walking loops. To access a desired map, go to www.SDparks.info and click on Park Locator. Next click on the park of interest, scroll to the bottom and click on Walking Map.
